Why Sacks Belong to the Quarterback
A sack happens because a rusher got home, but also because the quarterback held the ball, missed an open receiver or chose not to throw it away. Studies of sack rates find they stay with quarterbacks when they change teams more than with offensive lines.
That is why our dropback stats (EPA per dropback, sack %, ANY/A) count sacks. A quarterback who avoids them is helping his team.
